The Citadel Breaks Down Anderson College, 34-6
January 16, 2002

Charleston, SC --- The Citadel defeated Anderson College, 34-6, in front of a packed house Wednesday night in non-conference wrestling action in McAlister Field House.

The Bulldogs with the win improve their record to 3-4 as they prepare for the conference schedule and the All-Academy Tournament on February 2.

Anderson College jumped out to a three-point lead in the 165-pound match as Buck Buhler outlasted Mike Regner. The Citadel's James Rose came back with a vengeance to win 16-1 in the 174-pound weight class. At 184-pounds John Bohren, a native of Goose Creek, scored a major decision to propel the Bulldogs to an early 9-3 lead.

Jordan Everett, The Citadel's 197-pounder, won his match 10-3 and there was no heavyweight entry for Anderson making the score 18-3 in Bulldogs' favor. At 125-pounds, Brandon Gates of The Citadel managed a major decision over Jason Lanning of Anderson. The highlight of the night came at the expense of Michael Hogan, a freshman from Anderson, when freshman Sean Markey pinned Hogan in 49 seconds.

The Citadel's freshman Mike Martinez lost in sudden death to Anderson's Steve Volponi 11-9. At 149-pounds, Wayne Watts gave the Bulldogs a 31-6 lead by defeating Gerry Braun 10-3. The night ended with a win from Irmo native Anthony DelPriore.

"We wrestled hard, and we wrestled to dominate our opposition," stated coach Rob Hjerling. "There were a couple of weight classes we could have wrestled better, but Anderson wrestled hard and deserved those wins. The remainder of our schedule we need to be more prepared and ready for the tough wrestling to come."

The Citadel will return to action on January 19 as they travel to Campbell University and then again to Franklin & Marshall on January 27. The All-Academy Championships will be held at The Citadel on February 2 in McAlister Field House at 10 am.
