Davie Middle School, Mocksville, scored 35 points to edge Bethel Middle School, Canton, for the 7th grade state wrestling team title. Glade Creek Elementary, Ennice, placed third with 32 points.
The 8th grade winner, NW Cabarrus Middle School, Concord, did not win a weight class but placed 6 wrestlers to score 47 points, comfortably ahead of Davie Middle SchoolÍs 35 points. Sparta School, Sparta, near Glade Creek, placed third with 30 points.
The 9th Grade Division featured a strong team from Orange County High School, Hillsborough, scoring 51 points. Bandys High School in Catawba and host East Henderson High School in Hendersonville tied with 29 points. One point behind, with 28 were Alleghany High School, Sparta, and Reynolds High School, Winston-Salem.
With a new site, snow in the mountains and floods at the coast it is remarkable that entries were up 18% overall, lead by 271 9th graders. Many of these 9th graders will wrestle in NC High School Championship Regional Competition coming this Saturday.
The event is individual entry with school attended used for team scoring. NC Junior Olympic Wrestling Association, affiliated with USA Wrestling which arranges Olympic and youth wrestling in this country, put on the event. Rules and officials were from the HS rule book. The event began at 9 am and concluded at 7 pm on 11 mats in two gymnasiums. Weigh ins were conducted Wednesday at 24 separate sites.
Beginning February 28, NCJOW has events every weekend. Our next statewide event is the multi-state Tar Heel State Classic with freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling. It is March 28, 1998 at UNC Pembroke near Lumberton. Call 800-786-7581 for information.
