Watauga High participated in the "Battle of the South" tournament in Athens, AL on Jan 17. The tournament consisted of 15 teams from Alabama, Tennessee, Georgia, and Louisiana in addition to Watauga, representing North Carolina.Top teams included Athens High, 5A state champion in Alabama for 7 of the past 8 years; Huntsville, AL, a perennial top team in Alabama; and Redemptorist, from Baton Rouge, defending state champions in Louisiana.
Watauga, wrestling without 3 of its starters (including Jeff Cooper), finished in 6th place with 170 points. The top 5 teams were: 1) Athens, AL, 310 points; 2) Hartselle, AL, 228 points; 3) Huntsville, AL 223 points; 4) Clay-Chalksville, AL, 196 points, and 5) Redemptorist, LA, 182 points.
