Bandys 49 - Statesville 21

On Friday evening the Bandys wrestlers won the Southern District-7 conference title by defeating Statesville 49-21 in a conference match. The win brought Bandys to 4-0 in the conference and 19-2 overall. While just in their fourth season since restarting their wrestling program the Trojans have won the conference title the last two seasons and finished second three years ago. Bandys started wrestling in 1976, but discontinued the the sport in 1981. The program was restarted in the 1995-96 season.

Our kids have worked very hard in the off season the last couple of years to get where they are now. Many team members go to freestyle and AAU competition in the spring and wrestling camps in the summer. All of their hard work is now paying off. Currently the Trojans are the 5th ranked 1A/2A team in the state. Bandys has four wrestlers ranked in the top ten in the state at their weight class. Two are ranked first; 154lbs Sean McIntosh, (30-0) and 277lbs Jarvis McCullough, (28-1). Chris Douglas, 162lbs, (11-1), is ranked sixth and Eric Burns,127lbs (28-1), is fourth.

At the Statesville match Ishmeal Sifford started the Trojans with a 16-0 tech fall to make the score 5-0. Rinnie Ling and Clinton Kannenberg both got pins to make the score 17-0. At 127lbs Eric Burns suffered only his 2nd loss of the season to last years state runner-up Andy Madison in a hard fought 4-3 decision. Statesville followed with two pins to close the score to 17-15. At 140lbs Brandon Styers and 145lbs Josh Grindel both won major decisions for Bandys to bring the score to 25-15. Statesville chose to forfeit to highly ranked Sean McIntosh and Chris Douglas; this brought Bandys to a 37-15 lead.

At 171lbs Jonathon Hipps ended all hopes for Statesville with a 1st period pin. Statesville managed to win two close decisions at 189lbs and 215lbs then again chose to forfeit to another highly ranked Trojan, Jarvis McCullough at 275lbs making the final score 49-21. Bandys will wrestle Newton-Conover on Tueday night in their final conference match. Preliminaries will start at 6:00 pm.
