(article by Tim Stevens, Raleigh News & Observer) - The N.C. High School Athletic Association wrestling championships smashed the previous attendance record. The two-day event at Charlotte's Independence Arena last weekend drew 18,577 spectators.

"A few years ago we used to draw less than 2,000 for the finals," said Charlie Adams, the NCHSAA executive director. "We finally started filling a high school gym and now have graduated to almost filling a major facility."

Adams said wrestling has clearly moved to being the third most popular high school sport in North Carolina behind football and basketball.

"Wrestling is very spectator friendly," Adams said. "One of the keys to the popularity, though, is that wrestling has improved so much in the state. "The coaching and the competition is outstanding. Our best wrestlers are being heavily recruited. That wasn't the case a few years ago."
