TakeDown Report News:
Editor Notes :
This issue is regrettably late by a couple of days. Most of the news is
from college action and open meets. UNC recaptured the TDR # 1 spot after
winning the ACC Tournament. No other changes in the team rankings yet
there are a few individual ranking changes. The big national news last
weekend was the various conference tournaments which determined the
national qualifiers. It may have been hard to find these results. As we
looked in Mondays' USA Today we found the 1 picture and 1/4 page of
wrestling coverage buried in the 30-40 some pages of the alleged 'March
Madness.' Well the real "March Matness" revealed a new Big 10 (11 really)
Champ in Minnesota which stopped Iowa's 25 year reign. Oklahoma shocked
the Big 12 (5 really) field by topping top ranked Oklahoma State! We will
continue publishing once a week until the news runs out this spring. We
appreciate the news and results sent our way.

College Wrestlers of the Week :
John Mark Bentley, (149) of University of North Carolina and Greg Forbes
(197) of Univ. of North Carolina-Greensboro. Both are ranked # 1 at their
weight class and both have qualified for the Division I Nationals at Penn
State next week. John Mark is named for the second time this season due to
his quick recovery from a serious ankle injury. It was feared that he
would be out for the season and not only did he compete at but he dominated
the ACC Tourney at his weight. Greg placed 2nd in the Southern Conference
and was named as a wild card selection for nationals.
Our tip of the TDR headgear to John Mark and Greg!

Tar Heels Take Seventh ACC Wrestling Title in the Past Eight Years

Virginia's Roth named outstanding wrestler of the tournament. March 6, 1999
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - North Carolina won its third straight ACC
championship, riding on strong performances by nine finalists today at
University Hall in Charlottesville, Va. This is the Tar Heels seventh ACC
championship title in eight years.
JohnMark Bentley (149), Corey Bell (184), and Matt Kenny (HWT) scored
championship wins for North Carolina. UNC coach Bill Lam was named the 1999
ACC Coach of the Year as well. Bentley, ranked #5 nationally, and Bell both
won their second consecutive titles while tonight's victory was Kenny's
first.
Although Carolina, Virginia and N.C. State each had three individual
champions, the Tar Heels prevailed by exploiting their depth and placing
nine finalists all told in the field. The ACC championship was the
University's third of the 1998-99 school year and the first in a men's
sport. Previously women's soccer and women's indoor track claimed ACC
titles. UNC's men's basketball team will go after the school's fourth ACC
title of the school year Sunday against top-ranked Duke at Charlotte, N.C.
At 125, Virginia's eighth ranked Matt Roth claimed his first ACC title by
upsetting two-time defending champion and sixth ranked Chuckie Connor of
UNC in the much anticipated contest. Roth avenged his 2-0 loss to Connor
earlier this season. Roth stuck Joe Guzzio with 12 seconds to go in the
semifinal and went on to claim the Outstanding Wrestler Award as well.
N.C. State had three wrestlers win championships, and all three of them
were first-time champions: Tommy Davis (141), Pierre Pryor (157), and Kevin
Boross (174). Davis is currently ranked #15 in the country.
Virginia's Jim Harshaw, ranked #11 nationally, won his third consecutive
ACC title, after winning the last two at 150 and tonight's victory at 165.
Brandon York of Maryland wonhis first title at 133, and joining him in the
winner's circle for the first time was Craig Fenstermaker of Virginia, who
won at 197.
The ACC will send 20 wrestlers to the NCAA Championships, which will take
place in State College, Pa., March 18-20. A list of the qualifiers is
listed below.

Stewart sets 2000 Olympics as his goal by Jason Boyd Feb. 25th, Greenville
Daily Reflector
UNC Pembroke senior Kristian Stewart will be participating in this
weekend's NCAA regional wrestling tournament for the last time. But the
former Greene Central High School star has plenty of opportunities in line
when his college career ends. Stewart is ranked second in the nation among
Greco and Freestyle wrestlers in the 119-pound category. He plans to attend
several functions during the summer and has aspirations of participating in
the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, Australia.
"I expect to win a couple of matches there (at regionals)," Stewart said.
"Maybe I will have a good tourney and qualify for the nationals. It's a
big step and I'm just an average college wrestler, but we will see how it
goes." Stewart has been wrestling since 1993, the year Greene Central
began a wrestling program. He was good enough to get the chance to go to
UNCP, where he's been a competitive wrestler there for four years. But
Stewart's success in the sport comes from the events he's been involved
with when the college season ends. Stewart began participating in Greco and
Freestyle after his junior
year in high school. Under the direction of George Bancroft, who lives in
Wilson, Stewart learned the art and technique of wrestling. The
experience he gained helped him get to the regionals during his senior year
in high school. An injury forced him to forfeit in the consolation
semifinals of his weight class, but his success led to the offer from
several schools, including UNCP. "Tremendous concentration goes into
wrestling, no matter what style you wrestle," Stewart said. "A lot of
thought process and repetition goes into practice to be able to wrestle."
Stewart said his experience in Greco and Freestyle helped when coaches
began recruiting him. "I am an average college wrestler, and I've had some
good matches and some bad matches," he said. "It seems like I'm two years
behind everybody because I started so late in high school, so really my
senior year in college is like a sophomore year in college to everybody
else. "I'm proud of myself where I've come as far as high school and my
collegiate career. I'm satisfied with that, and I've learned a lot as far
as technique and such. But Greco and Freestyle is a dream and goal of mine.
I want to make the Olympic team." Stewart competed in the 1996 Olympic
trials and was named Most Valuable U.S. Wrestler in an event that took
place in Sweden a couple of years ago. He placed fourth in his weight class
in that tournament, finishing behind two world champions and an Olympian.
This summer, he will attend a camp at the Olympic Training Center in
Colorado Springs. He will also compete April 10-11 in Evanston, Ill., in a
national championship which is open to college wrestlers up to age 25.
>From there, he will compete in another event in Las Vegas on April 23. And
when his competitive days are finished, the physical education major would
like to teach on the high school level. Quite a long way to come for an
person who, at six years old, was told he might never walk again after
contracting spinal meningitis. "I've enjoyed the college life, but now
it's time to hang it up," said Stewart, who will be getting married in
June. "I've really enjoyed it all."
