Cardinal Gibbons High School Wins NCISAA Wrestling Championship
Cardinal Gibbons wrestlers traveled to Charlotte Country Day this past weekend
to compete in the 21st annual NCISAA Sate Wrestling Championship and earned
their 4th State Championship title in 7 years. Evenly matched to the stern
competition of Charlotte Country Day, Cardinal Gibbons returned with the title
by a 13.5 point margin. Fourteen schools competed.
Coach Chris Tomasic attributed the Crusaders solid but close victory to good
preparation, solid determination, and the heart of his wrestling team.
"Everyone stepped up to the plate. We could not have achieved this victory
without everyone's contribution." Ten of the thirteen wrestlers placed in the
top three of each weight class.
Three individual state championship titles were won. Senior Jon Binanay won
his second state championship title in a row in the 119 weight class against
Charlotte Latin, finishing the season with 51 wins (130 career wins). Paul
Wallace, a junior, secured the title in the 135 weight class topping his
second place achievement last year. Wallace also received, by conference
coach election, the title of tournament MVP. Ryan Weigele captured the title
for the 171 weight class, becoming the first freshman to ever win the state
championship in the Crusaders history.
Outstanding performances were turned in to grasp five second place titles.
Freshman Casey Laudate placed second in the 103 weight class, a distinguished
accomplishment for a first year wrestler. Calin Riley, a junior, and
defending state champion of the 103 weight class, placed second in the 112
weight class after a tough final match and a season of 38 wins. A second
place finish in the 140 weight class went to Adam Tierney who had secured 31
wins for Gibbons prior to this tournament. Senior Paul Hilliard capped his
wrestling career with a second place finish in the 160 weight class after a
tough 3-1 decision went to Charlotte Country Day. Sophomore Sean Paez placed
second in the 189 weight class after contributing 31 wins to the team's
season.
Senior Jeremy Barefoot placed third in the 132 weight class concluding a
better than 500 season. Senior Chris Marlow secured third for the 147
division following a full season of dedicated performances. Chris Walsh
placed 4th in the 127 weight class rounding out his junior season of over 29
wins. Scott Riley placed 5th in the 215 weight class after a difficult loss
by 1 point in the quest to tie for third. Jeremy Sigler pinned his opponent
in his first match in the 152 weight class, but was disappointed in having to
forfeit the rest of the tournament due to a rib injury. Chris Goff scored pin
points toward the close Crusader victory in the heavy weight class.
Coach Tomasic anticipates an outstanding season for the young Crusader team
next year.
