Congratulations to East Gaston's Jermey McKinney, who set a new state record for season wins, finishing with 58. The record was 55, set by Josh Taylor of West Brunswick during the 98-99 season.
Another new record was set by Drew Forshey, of St Stephens, for most season wins by a freshman. Forshey finished the season 50-0, breaking the previous record of 47, set by Curry Pickard of Morehead in the 97-98 season.
Tying the record for career wins was Danny Misenheimer, of East Rowan. Misenheimer finished his career with 173 wins, tying the record originally set by Chapel Hill's Jake Reynolds.
Congratulations to Nathan Dnistran of Ravenscroft, who earned All-American status by placing 8th at the National High School Prep Championships. Forsyth Country Day's Nick Iannuzzi repeated as All-American, placing 6th. (he placed 7th last season).

2000 ASICS All-American Teams
Bob Mauldin of Mat News was named Wrestling USA's State Editor of the Year. This follows his recognition earlier this year from the National Wrestling Media Association, which named Mat News as Wrestling Publication of the Year. Congratulations to Sean McIntosh (Bandys), who was named All-American by Wrestling USA Magazine. Honorable Mention recognition was given to Jermaine Hodge (Orange), Jordan Binder (Currituck), and Carlos Garcia (Seventy-First).
Sara McMann named
The Mat's International Wrestler of the Week for May 29-June 4.
Danny Misenheimer (East Rowan), was selected by the National High School Coaches Association as Wrestler of the Year for North Carolina.
Sara McMann, formerly of McDowell High School, recently won the Women's Freestyle National Championship, being named Outstanding Wrestler, and is currently ranked #1 in the country in her weight class.
Congratulations to Brevard's Manny DeShauteurs, named the NCHSAA Male Athlete of the Year.
NWCA announces All-Academic Teams - several North Carolina wrestlers make the list. Campbell University ranks 6th out of all Division I schools, with an average GPA of 3.0746. NC State is 23rd with a 2.8883.
Individually, Zach Brietenbach of NC State made the first team, with a 3.992 GPA. Making the 2nd Team were John Christian (3.87) and Billy Greene (3.8) of Campbell, and Honorable Mentions were UNC's Clint Osborn (3.64) and Jamie Groudle (3.39). Congratulations to these young men for setting an example by excelling in the classroom as well as on the mat!
National Wrestling Media Association names annual National Wrestling Journalism Awards. Congratulations to Bob Mauldin - Mat News was named as the nation's Wrestling Publication of the Year! This is an much deserved honor, as he has put so much of his time (not to mention mileage on his car!) into this newsletter for the past 30 years. All of North Carolina should be proud of this recognition, and we all owe Bob Mauldin a special thanks for everything he does for this sport.
Congratulations also to Joe Lareau, as The Mat was named Website of the Year. Joe started this site 5 years ago, and it quickly became a premier source for wrestling news in the country. He recently sold The Mat to USA Wrestling, who will use it as the homepage for the Amateur Wrestling Alliance.
