Title IX

The following is suggested language for a leaflet to be given out at state high school tournaments all over the country. You might want to give everyone who receives a leaflet the names of the Congressmen and their phone numbers etc.

PROPORTIONALITY IS DESTROYING MALE SPORTS OPPORTUNITIES

Wrestling has lost 450 college programs since 1972. College wrestling will soon be extinct unless we fight together to abolish proportionality. Male gymnastics is on the brink of extinction while female gymnastics thrives at the college level. There is no logical explanation for the imminent extinction of most Olympic sports at the college level except that "proportionality" is causing it. Already proportionality is beginning to be applied at the high school level.

What is proportionality? It is the rule thought up by the Department of Education bureaucrats that forces all schools to make every school have about 50-50 male to female athletic participation ratios. The way the rule works is that if 53% of the student population is female (which is the case now nationally at the college level), then about 53% of the athletes must be females.

This quota is forcing the administrators around the country to dump male athletes in droves. The difference in male and female participation is very large (190,000 to 110,000) but the difference could be made up if females walk-on to teams in the same percentage that males do. Males participate in a non-scholarship capacity in about twice the numbers that females do.

HOW TO GET PROPORTIONALITY ABOLISHED

The very important persons in getting proportionality abolished are your Congressmen. Contact them and explain your objections to proportionality. Then ask for their position on proportionality. Make them stick to issue - yes or no. If they say that they can’t get legislation introduced right now to abolish it, just ask if they would vote yes or not to abolish it. Most will equivocate and try to avoid the question - don’t let them. Try to get 50 people to contact your Congressman if possible.

If your Congressman opposes proportionality, please ask him/her to contact Congressman Dennis Hastert’s office.

Thanks for your help.
