Title IX
There was more than one miracle last week. Everybody knows about Gable's
pulling the coup of the decade (or maybe the century) by not only upsetting
OSU, but also scoring a record number of points at the NCAA Tournament.
Very few know about the miracle Congressman Hastert pulled off in Congress -
He got 50 Congressmen to sign on to a brief which he filed at the Supreme
Court. As you all know if you've been reading this site for very long, we are
trying to get the Supreme Court to decide whether proportionality is
constitutional. If the Court will take the case AND the Court rules that the
rule is unconstitutional, we will have turned the corner and taken the first
steps toward averting extinction.
Hastert pulled off the first miracle last week by getting the most
Congressmen ever in history to signa friend-of-the-court brief. It is now up
to the Supreme Court to decide whether to take the case. (Then it will be up
to us to get a brief filed). Then it will be up to the Supreme Court to
decide whether we win or lose.
I helped in the review of the Congressional and Wrestling briefs - and as a
member of the Supreme Court bar, my name is on the Congressional brief.
However, the person who drafted the brief for the Congress free of charge was
Daniel Kinsella, a Chicago attorney. The person who got a University of
Chicago law professor (Richard Epstein) to draft a brief for the wrestling,
etc. community (for free) was Leo Kocher, coach of the University of Chicago
wrestling team.
All of these people have been, and are, incredibly important to the survival
of wrestling. Before these attorneys got involved in very short notice, I was
told by attorneys who do this for a living that it would cost up to $35,000
- $40,000 per brief to get the briefs done (for a total of $70,000-$80,000!).
Thanks to all of you who contacted your Congressman and determined whether
they were for or against proportionality. This is only the beginning of the
war no matter what happens here, so if you haven't found out where your
Congressman stands, please do so. Thanks.
Thanks for your help.
