If you are a high school wrestler give this article to your father - or
better yet your mother -- right now.
Wrestling is in imminent danger of extinction. For every female athlete added
at the college level, four or five male athletic participatory opportunities
are being eliminated. At the present rate, wrestling at the college level
will be gone in the next five to ten years.
Those of you who love wrestling can fiddle while wrestling burns, or you can
fight to save wrestling. There is one thing that you can do that will help
wrestling, you and your son. Talk to the college coaches and athletic
directors at the colleges where your son intends to go to school. Ask them
frankly whether the program will still be around in four or five years. Let
administrators / presidents of the schools that cannot commit to your son's
program for the next four years know what you think of them - in writing.
Don't let your son attend any school where the school's administrators will
not assure you that the program will be viable in four years.
When your son goes to the school of his choice send a letter to the
president, athletic director and coach explaining that your son went to that
school because of their assurances and thank them for their courage, etc.
