Title IX
by Dale Anderson
September 13, 1997
The postsecondary education subcommittee of the House of Representatives
is considering adding language to a bill which will help to protect male
athletes in the same way female athletes are protected.
The bill itself is called the education reauthorization bill and it
provides for $35 billion to be given out to collges and college students
in the form of loans, grants, etc.
The following is some of the language which we want to add to the bill:
"In applying the Doctrine of Proportionality as a test to determine
compliance with Title IX, the Secretary of Education shall ensure that
schools receiving funding under this act shall not diminish in any way
the opportunity for students of either gender to participate in
intercollegiate athletics."
You should contact your Congressman and tell them to support the
language. Here are some talking points:
- according to the NCAA, during the past five years for every female
added, four males have been dumped
- at the division 3 level the ratio is 20 males dropped for every
female
added
- presently there are more female teams than male teams to
participate
on
- even militant and aggressive women's groups are saying that it is
wrong to achieve proportionality by eliminating male athletes or
resources
